80th
Assembly Democratic Candidate Rick Gonzales Receives Endorsement from
UFCW Local 174D
Coachella Valley,
CA
(April 14, 2008) - Rick Gonzales, 80th Assembly Democratic
candidate, has won the endorsement from the United Food Commercial
Workers (UFCW) Local 174D, which represents the Spreckles Sugar plant in
Brawley. Union President Paul Cruz announced the endorsement by
asserting that Gonzales is the best candidate to represent the 80th
Assembly in Sacramento.
“I am especially honored to receive the support and
endorsement of the UFCW,” expressed Gonzales “I am a strong supporter of
the labor movement and will continue to take an active role in
Sacramento to ensure the rights of contract workers are improved and
preserved.”
With over 250 members, UFCW Local 174D represents men
and women employed by the Spreckles Sugar plant, one of only two sugar
processing facilities in the entire state of California. Following
extensive outreach to UFCW members, the UFCW Board voted unanimously to
endorse Gonzales.
“We are proud to support Rick Gonzales,” stated Union
President, Paul Cruz. “We believe that with his experience, Rick is the
most qualified candidate to represent the needs of our members in
Sacramento. He has been a longtime advocate of policies and legislation
favorable to contract labor workers and the issues that affect the 80th
Assembly District.”
After graduating from
San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political
science, Gonzales followed his father’s example of public service and
moved to Washington, DC, to work with the legislative staff of United
States Senator Edward Kennedy, U.S. Representative Ed Roybal (an early
Latino civil rights pioneer), and U.S. Representative Lucille
Roybal-Allard. He later served as Deputy Director of Legislative
Affairs for Vice President Al Gore.
Following a
successful 10-year career in public service in Washington, DC, Gonzales
returned home to earn a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from
the University of Southern California and for the past five years, Rick
has worked at Wells Fargo where he manages investments in affordable
housing apartments throughout the region, including Palm Springs,
Coachella, El Centro and Calexico.
